Maria and Clint Cantrell took ownership of Sea Change Eco Retreat (formerly known as Talitali’anga Eco Resort) in October of 2016. Their decision to buy Sea Change resulted from a strong passion to connect with people from around the world, and to share this incredibly unique and beautiful place with others.
“Clint and I have travelled and lived around the world, and have been to many islands in the South Pacific. This specific spot has proven to be our favourite and when the opportunity came for us to become resort owners and to carry on the wonderful theme that Craig and Kristen started with Talitali’anga, we jumped at it. We hope it is a place that will draw old friends and new friends, as well as our children and eventually grand children! We also hope Sea Change will be a place of peace, wellness and healing to others - as this special place in Tonga has been and continues to be for us.”
“Maria knew right away that my first visit to Uoleva Island was a life changing experience for me. This inspired her to name our place “Sea Change” – which comes from William Shakespeare’s The Tempest and literally means “a change wrought by the sea”. For over 27 years I have worked in a stressful profession, quite often travelling around the world and dealing with highly complex situations and problems. When I go to Sea Change I completely disconnect from the day to day chaos of modern society and become very mindful and connected to this oasis and the wonderful culture of Tonga. I have also loved seeing how this place has impacted other people, including Maria and our children. Watching Maria play guitar and sing with Tongans around a bonfire by our beach is just about the coolest thing in the world for me. I have also had the joy of sharing a swim with Maria and our very friendly humpback whales, scuba diving with my daughter, and learning traditional hand line fishing with my son and our Tongan friends. It so inspires me to see others have similar experiences, and be a part of this place which provides a profound opportunity for a sea change in life.”
Maria and Clint have been married for 27 years. They have raised two children (Hannah and Jack) and have lived in the US, UK, New Zealand and now Tonga. The Cantrells are dual citizens of New Zealand and the United States. Maria has had successful careers in raising two children, mechanical engineering, teaching, and now runs her own massage therapy practice in New Zealand and Tonga. She is a passionate musician – plays guitar, sings, has been in performing bands and directs a women’s choir. Clint is a civil engineer, and has worked as a consultant on engineering projects around the world. He also coaches a high school cycling team, is a certified spinning (indoor cycling) instructor and has worked as a fitness trainer. His passions include music (he is a drummer), competitive cycling, weight lifting, sharing a nice red wine with others, and watching Maria smile.
