Overview of Sea Change and useful information below...

Beach in front of Sea Change

For travellers who enjoy truly unique destinations, Sea Change is an off the grid eco retreat providing unique luxury beach front accommodation with the lightest possible footprint. Sea Change is small but perfectly formed, an idyllic escape for up to 12 guests at any one time – giving you an almost deserted island paradise to chill out and recharge your batteries.  Sea Change is managed full time by Becky and Mahe Pepa, who combine extensive experience in hospitality management with Tongan culture - offering you a real chance to experience everything our location has to offer.

Where are we?

Sea Change Eco Retreat is located on the remote island of Uoleva in the Kingdom of Tonga. Uoleva is part of the Ha'apai Island group located approximately 165 kms northeast of the main island of Tongatapu. These are the very waters where the Mutiny on the Bounty started when they put Captain William Bligh in the dinghy (1789). To view where we are in the world simply enter "Uoleva" into Google Maps or Google Earth. As you will see, our island can only be accessed by boat and there are no roads!

How do you get here?

To get here you can fly directly from Auckland (2 ½ hours) or Fiji (1 hour) or Sydney (5 ½ hours) to Tongatapu – and from there you can take a 30 minute flight or 12 hour ferry ride to Ha’apai. We will pick you up in Ha’apai either at the airport or ferry wharf. Ten minutes later you will be on our boat for a short ride to the best beach on Uoleva Island – which is right in front of Sea Change. The journey to get here is beautiful, and you will truly feel you have travelled to a remote and amazing place!

What is our accommodation like?

Our location on Uoleva Island is so amazing, you could sleep on a straw mat on the beach and feel like you were in paradise! However, we decided to make things much more comfortable and have built 6 fales (Tongan for house). We provide a choice of either “glamping” style safari tent fales on elevated platforms with queen sized beds on frames, or our larger luxury fales which have a queen size bed with the addition of either one or two long single beds. We have spared no expense on our mattresses as we know how important a good night’s sleep is! Each fale is well spaced from the other, providing an absolute sense of privacy and peacefulness. You will walk down a tranquil pathway through our coconut tree forest to your fale. Once there you can enjoy a lie in your own hammock, a shower in your private bathroom, a nice glass of wine on your own deck – or just simply lie on your bed and listen to the sound of waves gently lapping on our wide sandy beach only metres from your fale.

"The tents are really luxury bedrooms with a super comfy bed and lovely linen and towels. Bedside tables with lamps and places to put clothes and the view out to the sea and reef are magical. The path to the adjacent bathroom block is lit at night by fairy lamps and the gas hot water shower is a treat after a long swim."

Food and drink?

Arguably one of the key ingredients to a great holiday! We have carefully designed our menus to offer a wide range of food which focuses on fresh produce, meats and fish available in Tonga. For dinner we offer a selection of mains which include beef, chicken, fish and vegetarian options – and of course a scrumptious dessert. We rotate our dinner menus daily. We also offer continental breakfasts with fresh fruit (including coconut from our very own trees), cereals, toast, coffee, tea, juice, etc – and lunches with lovely salads, pasta, sandwiches, etc. Finally – our bar features amazing daily cocktails, lovely wines, spirits and a selection of local and foreign beers. You can choose to purchase a very affordable all-inclusive meal package.

"We had 2 great days swimming with the whales and otherwise walked and read in the hammocks, swam and had a total battery recharge. We will be back next year!"

Communications & Internet Access

Although we are located on a remote island, we offer wifi access ($13 for 1 GB for guests staying here), and there is patchy mobile/cellular access. However we encourage our guests to try and “unplug” as much as possible, and we are happy for you to say to others that you cannot be reached while on your holiday!
